Psychoanalytical training

Registered medical doctors and psychologists can be accepted for psychoanalytic training arranged by The Finnish Psycho-Analytical Society. In exceptional circumstances a person with some other higher academic degree can also qualify for training. The applicant has to have enough clinical experience of work with patients and a long enough personal psychoanalysis with a training analyst.

The applicant will be interviewed by three training analysts to assess his/her personal suitability. The Training Committee of The Training Institute makes the final decision after having listened to the interviewers. Additional interviews may be arranged if needed.

The training follows the standards of The International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). It constitutes of four years of seminars and at least three supervised psychoanalytical cases. In addition to this the candidates have to pass an examination in psychiatry on the approbatur level or an oral examination of equal extent and have to work for one year within psychiatry. 

After having passed the training the candidate may apply for membership in the society and be registered by The National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs as Healthcare Professionals of advanced psychotherapy training.

The training seminars are on Fridays every week. They contain four years of training in theory and methodology and clinical case seminars. In addition to this there are dream and developmental seminars, seminars on child and adolescent psychoanalysis that continue for one year. Moreover there are seminars of special clinical problems for two years. The candidate must choose in addition to the obligatory seminars 32 hours of optional seminars. The training will contain 605 hours of seminars altogether. The society arranges scientific meetings and training days which the candidates also can participate.
